THE LATEST Global Attitudes survey by the Pew Foundation contains a lot of bad news for the United States, but there was one relative bright spot in Latin America: Venezuela. According to Pew, 56 percent of Venezuelans say they have a favorable view of the United States, a higher number than in Britain or Canada. Seventy-one percent say they like U.S. television and movies and a stratospheric 84 percent feel positively about Americans. Though only 23 percent say they have confidence in George W. Bush, the U.S. president's rating is almost 50 percent higher in Venezuela than that of Russian President Vladimir Putin or Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Those numbers cast an interesting light on the foreign policy of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, who describes the United States as an evil empire and Mr. Bush as "the devil," and who just completed a tour of three countries he sees as close allies in a global anti-American alliance: Russia, Iran and Belarus. He addressed each of their leaders as "brother" and called for ever-closer economic and military bonds between their governments and his. This raises an obvious question: For whom was Mr. Chávez speaking?

His hosts clearly had something to gain. Belarus, known as Europe's last dictatorship, is such a pariah that its ruler, Alexander Lukashenko, is now shunned even by his longtime patron, Mr. Putin; he was delighted to be visited by any head of state. Belarus and Venezuela share "absolutely identical" views, Mr. Lukashenko giddily proclaimed.

In Moscow, where Mr. Chávez next stopped, the interest is mostly pecuniary. Mr. Putin has sold Mr. Chávez $3.5 billion in weapons in the past several years and is eager to peddle more. While in Russia, Mr. Chávez talked of buying submarines and toured an aircraft factory, inspecting Moscow's latest attack helicopter and petulantly asking why he hadn't been shown it before he bought 53 less-advanced Russian helicopters last year. Then he gave a lengthy speech in which he rued the demise of the Soviet Union.

Mr. Ahmadinejad also had good reason to welcome Mr. Chávez at a time when his government faces a new round of sanctions by the U.N. Security Council. His Venezuelan visitor obliged, defending Iran's nuclear program and promising to "unite the Persian Gulf and the Caribbean." "I thank God that Iran and Venezuela are standing together forever," Mr. Chávez said.

According to Pew, 81 percent of Venezuelans oppose Iran's acquiring a nuclear weapon, but Mr. Chávez is looking beyond his country, hoping to become the leader of global opposition to the United States. As the Pew survey shows, there's plenty of it out there, but Mr. Chávez is not the beneficiary. In only three of the 47 countries surveyed by Pew does he inspire confidence in 50 percent or more of those questioned: Venezuela, Mali and Ivory Coast. In Russia his rating is 21 percent. In Peru, Chile and Mexico, Mr. Chávez's numbers are far below those of the despised Mr. Bush. The answer to the question of whom Venezuela's president represents emerges from the data: No one, other than himself.

LATE LAST YEAR, 16 U.S. congressmen voiced their approval for Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. Representatives Barney Frank, John Conyers, Chaka Fattah, Jan Schakowsky, Jose Serrano, and others complained in a letter to President Bush that the United States was not adequately protecting Chavez against a groundswell of internal opposition to his increasingly authoritarian rule--an upsurge that might lead to his ouster. Elected to power in 1998, Lt. Col. Chavez has hijacked democracy in Venezuela and is openly moving the country toward totalitarianism. Beyond Venezuela's borders, he celebrates, protects, and does business with terrorists.

A day after the September 11 terrorist attacks, President Chavez declared that "The United States brought the attacks upon itself, for their arrogant imperialist foreign policy." Chavez also described the U.S. military response to bin Laden as "terrorism," claiming that he saw no difference between the invasion of Afghanistan and the September 11 terrorist attacks.

While the United States considers Saddam Hussein a threat to world peace, Chavez has hailed Saddam as his "brother" and business "partner." In the past two years Chavez has continued to cultivate relationships with the governments listed in the State Department's roll of state sponsors of terrorism--he has been particularly vocal in his support for the Iranian regime.

Last December a high-level Venezuelan military defector gave sworn testimony that terrorist links exist between al Qaeda and the Chavez government. The defector, President Chavez's personal pilot, alleges that one operation involved the transfer of close to $1 million in cash to Osama bin Laden.

In January, Judicial Watch, a public-interest legal organization based in Washington, filed a $100 million suit against Hugo Chavez on behalf of a victim and survivor of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The lawsuit alleges that Chavez provided material, financial, and other support and assistance to the al Qaeda terror network.

In February, a Venezuelan Muslim, Hasil Mohammed Rahaham-Alan, was detained in London's Gatwick airport for stashing a grenade in his luggage. He was apprehended after disembarking from a British Airways flight that originated in Caracas. The British Mail reported that al Qaeda operates a training camp on the Venezuelan island of Margarita. The Venezuelan ambassador in London has obtained a "legal stop" preventing the newspaper from commenting on the article.

Also, the congressional signatories turn a blind eye to mountains of hard evidence--most supplied by U.S. allies in the Colombian government--confirming Chavez's support for the FARC and ELN terrorist networks. The Colombian government declared that the head of the FARC terrorist group, Manuel Marulanda, is hiding in Venezuela, and the Colombian embassy in Caracas was bombed a day after Chavez made a blistering speech attacking Colombia. The Financial Times reported last week that the perpetrators of the bombing may be FARC terrorists or even members of the Venezuelan secret police. Yesterday in Colombia, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Roy Chaderton gave a press conference where he unequivocally stated that the Chavez government will not refer to the FARC Colombian terrorists as "terrorists," because the Chavez government wishes to remain "neutral."

It is unthinkable that congressmen who enjoy access to detailed intelligence reports are willing so blithely to disregard the Chavez government's track record on matters that directly affect the national security of the United States.

These congressional Democrats are not alone in their misguided support for Hugo Chavez. For years, Representative Cass Ballenger (R-NC) has had a bizarre relationship with Chavez. Ballenger has emphasized that the "Venezuelan Caucus" he established with Rep. William Delahunt (D-MA) exists to "show friendship to President Chavez and to encourage him to embrace democracy." Ballenger and Hunt have embraced Chavez--and served as his U.S. tour guides. In return, Chavez has repeatedly used his friendship with the congressmen to prop himself up by showing strong support from and access to powerful members of the U.S. government.

To their credit, seven of the congressmen who wrote to President Bush have written another letter. On March 6 they wrote Chavez with some questions. They didn't ask about terrorism. Instead they inquired about the arrests and murders of members of the opposition to Chavez's rule. It's progress, of a sort. But we can do better.

Any congressional support of Chavez is particularly galling given that he is vocal about his loathing of the United States and American liberty. Yet unlike Chavez and his paid supporters, the great majority of Venezuelans have great affection for America and its freedoms. A recent Pew survey on "Global Attitudes" demonstrated that, although much of the world--and nearly all of South America--resents and despises America, Venezuelans rank among the greatest admirers of the United States and its people.

Congress should put President Chavez on notice that his dictatorial actions will not be tolerated It should also urge the Organization of American
States to expel him, and impose immediate sanctions for his state sponsorship of terrorism. Any appeasement of Chavez sends a comforting message to the enemies of freedom. Additionally, it sends a dispiriting signal to the natural allies of the United States: the millions of Venezuelans who reject the grotesque tyranny of Hugo Chavez.

Citing security threats, the Venezuelan president last week canceled a planned visit to New York. Meanwhile U.S. intelligence officers are lobbying charges that it is Chavez who is harboring Islamic fundamentalists in Venezuela. We talk to Venezuelan ambassador Bernardo Alvarez. Last week Chavez canceled a planned trip to the United States because of security threats.

Meanwhile a recent report in US News and World Reports tiled “Terror Close to Home” charges that Venezuela is emerging as “a potential hub of terrorism in the Western Hemisphere.” The article claims Chavez has provided assistance to Islamic fundamentalists.

The magazine claims that Venezuela has given social security-like cards to thousands of foreigners including many from Middle Eastern nations including Syria, Pakistan, Egypt and Lebanon. The U.S. government has warned that by giving out these ID documents, terrorists could more easily obtain Venezuelan passports and U.S. visas.

US News and World Reports also claims that US intelligence officials are investigating whether a Venezuelan of Arab descent named Hakim Mamad al Diab Fatah had ties to any of the Sept. 11 hijackers. One official described him as a person of interest.

The article goes on to claim close ties between Chavez’s government and the Columbian rebel group FARC.

AMY GOODMAN: Welcome to Democracy Now!.

BERNARDO ALVAREZ: Good morning.

AMY GOODMAN: Can you start off telling us why president Chavez did not come as was planned to the United Nations to address the general assembly?

BERNARDO ALVAREZ: Well, you know, there are of course always evaluations that the head of state, in that case the information we have from the palace, in Venezuela, that there were some security concerns. And that came along with few months ago and recently there were some reports in Florida newspapers all for former Venezuelan military and training camps in Florida, this is what the newspapers said. I don’t know to, promote invasion to, promote any actions against Venezuela. We have sent the U.S., ambassador that information and we are waiting for response from the U.S. government.

If you remember few months ago there was a report that an organization called Judicial Watch was suing the Venezuelan government on behalf of the victims of September 11th because they say that president Chavez has given a million dollars to Al Qaeda. Venezuelan ambassador to India came here to the U.S. to United Nations to Washington and even to Miami to present the proof that we in fact gave a million dollars to the United Nations office for the refugees.

Totally the contrary. And we also get that information to the F.B.I. and we’re still waiting for an investigation from the F.B.I. because that was some news coming from the people in Florida.

JUAN GONZALEZ: Could you give us your reaction to these sensational charges in U.S. news and world report that Venezuela has come in essence a hot bed for terrorists from other parts of the world to stay in your country now.

BERNARDO ALVAREZ: When you look at the article firsthand you think that you are probably looking at movie. I haven’t received any complain or requests of information by the U.S. government. It’s the same format that we have seen lately, for example, margarita island being training camp for the Al Qaeda, whatever it’s like having a terrorist camp in Cancun, Mexico. This is a resort, small island it is not possibility whatsoever to train anybody there. There are no military forces in Margarita Island.

The whole idea that we are able to give I.D.’s to thousand of people from the Middle East and then they get their Visa and come to the U.S. so you probably have to blame the U.S. embassy in Venezuela rather than the Venezuelan government. If you look at that there are no proof and confirmed rumors, same story. What worries us is that they use information supposedly coming from the U.S. officials and this is what we have said. We are not the aggressors here we would like the U.S. government to respond on that because they quote highly credible sources from the political branches of the U.S. government. We have asked through the diplomatic channels the U.S. government to respond from that.

JUAN GONZALEZ: What about the situation right now in Venezuela, the political situation that especially after the Supreme Court there has ordered that the referendum, the recall referendum petition had to be redone by getting new signatures. What has been the situation as the opposition in their attempt to gather new signatures for new attempt at a recall?

BERNARDO ALVAREZ: Yes, I think in the situation after the March, because we cannot forget that members of the opposition we have said that there are important non-democratic groups in the opposition. They try to stop the country. They tried to stop oil production which is the heart of the Venezuelan economy. And we have been recovering from that economic damages. And we have been stabilizing the political situation. And all we want is that all parties should play keeping in mind constitution so there is not constitutional way out of any political crisis in Venezuela. Now we have an impartial electoral body. Those people looked at the signatures and if you might see that nobody has reacted against that. Because I mean imagine that you are going to recall mandate of an official with signatures that weren’t collected by private firm and they were kept for I don’t know, six months. So I think this is something that is over now. What is important we have electoral body, we have the norms for collecting signatures and there is a constitution. If you allow me, this is one of the points we have been discussing with the U.S. administration because we said the referendum is not the result of any political agreement between the government and the opposition. The president of the Supreme Court came to the U.S. and he said in the case that the government and the opposition should sign a political agreement to hold a referendum, it will be unconstitutional because the referendum is a right of Venezuelan people to recall the mandate of any official elected. Elected official. So what is important now that everything is clear, we have electoral body and there are not only they have been requests for the recall referendum for the president but for state governors, for members of the national assembly. This is what democracy is about.

Chavez, The Future Of Communism?

NRO: Castro Can't Die Soon Enough For Venezuela's President

A Cuban immigrant ran up to me last night, flush with excitement at rumors coming from her Miami relatives that Fidel Castro had died, wanting to know if it was true so she could start partying. A quick check of the wires damped her spirits a bit, as services were reporting Castro had gone into surgery for gastrointestinal bleeding and temporarily relinquished power to his mousy brother Raul.

She and others who risked everything to escape that Communist hellhole won’t be the only ones cheering at the eventual — perhaps imminent — passing of the cigar-chain-smoking tyrant.

As much as they’ve snuggled and back-patted, as much as they act like dysfunctional father and bratty son, the death of the lynchpin of Latin American Communism will probably be the best news Hugo Chavez has gotten since he met his useful anti-Bush idiot dream girl, Cindy Sheehan.

Because as much as the Venezuelan ruler spouts adulation for the Cuban social model and figureheads such as Che Guevara and Castro, they are the old revolution. Cuba is the isolated Communist island that has never squeezed itself out from under the thumb of the West, focusing most of its energy on weathering the U.S. trade embargo. Though Castro survived U.S. attempts on his life, like the CIA’s famous exploding seashell, his famous tumble down the stairs in old age was a metaphor for his regime. Cuba became the floating prison from which thousands of influential American immigrant businesspeople, politicians, etc., hailed, and never has ceased to be the island from which citizens risk life and limb to escape. Whereas Castro envisioned that his Communist utopia would set the gold standard for the world, he has been handily upstaged by dissidents and exiles who have, over the decades, become poster children for the fundamental thirst for liberty.

Chavez sees this as old Communism, and he is the future. He is the Bolivarian revolutionary learning from his Communist forefathers’ mistakes —save for the fundamentally-flawed-philosophy one — and thinking beyond even his own Venezuela. He is quashing opposition, press and even clergy with such slick spin to successfully delude outsiders into believing that he is a humanitarian who has perfected socialism — not the power-ravenous megalomaniac who claims even Jesus Christ was a socialist revolutionary.

Chavez fancies himself the cult of personality that will eclipse the long-fading allure of Castro; he fantasizes about being the larger-than-life leader who can unite even the most stubborn and independent Latin American countries into the United States of Hugo.

While some applaud Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's return to power as a victory for democracy, recent events there actually highlight the severe damage done to Latin America's oldest democracy by the increasingly erratic and authoritarian Chavez.

After three years of demagoguery, divisive rhetoric and left-leaning policies under this aspiring "caudillo," Venezuela's political institutions are a shambles, and the country is deeply polarized. This has left most Venezuelan democrats with few alternatives, and the military in a very difficult position.

Since his election in 1998 Chavez has been aggressively subverting Venezuela's democratic institutions while consolidating his grip on power. Using Cuban dictator Fidel Castro as his role model, Chavez has been employing democratic pretexts, referendums and a strange mixture of fascist and socialist ideology, rhetoric and strategy to try to transform Venezuela into a militarized one-party state. Initially popular, his undemocratic actions have more recently provoked massive opposition.

As his nascent "Bolivarian Revolution" crumbled and his popularity evaporated Chavez became increasingly paranoid and authoritarian. With less than 30 percent approval he nevertheless recently stated that he would be president until 2021. With his support in the legislature disappearing he has begun ruling even more by executive decree (enacting 49 laws in the last six months alone). As his troubles mounted, he repeatedly threatened to impose a "state of exception" and martial law.

For those criticizing the conservative military elements who opposed him we should recall that it is this leftist former lieutenant colonel (often wearing his military fatigues and red beret) who brought the military out of the barracks and into politics in the first place - first in his failed military coup in 1992 and more recently by placing them in key political and economic positions throughout the country.

No Military 'Eunuchs'

After his election Chavez told the armed forces they were no longer "political eunuchs" and his new constitution assigns them "active participation in national development" thus making them a political force. Active-duty and former military officers permeate his administration.

Under his "Plan Bolivar" the armed forces have been given control over a major government social program, ostensibly aimed at alleviating poverty. Evidence leaked from within however, has indicated that immense sums of money from this program have ended up in the bank accounts of several pro-Chavez generals.

Chavez's efforts at control have not been limited to politics or the military. He has also sought to impose socialist indoctrination in the schools (even importing hundreds of Cuban government teachers), tried to take over the national federation of trade unions (CTV), the national oil company (PDVSA), openly attacked the Catholic Church and persecuted the media.

Recently his vice president also created Castro-inspired armed para-civilian militias called "Bolivarian Circles" to support his regime, and Cuban agents have been integrated into Chavez's intelligence apparatus.

In response, an unprecedented broad cross-section of Venezuelans reacted to his growing authoritarianism with peaceful civil protest. When the mercurial demagogue turned to violence and ordered the military's help, members of the high command balked and withdrew their support. By encouraging Chavez's resignation they hoped to prevent further bloodshed and also keep "El Comandante" from using this self-inflicted crisis to fulfill his threats to impose a "state of exception" and martial law.

Ultimately the short-lived interim government of Pedro Carmona overstepped its bounds (reportedly against exhortations made by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Otto Reich) when it dissolved the Chavez-created National Assembly. This provoked pro-Chavez supporters and emboldened Chavez to renege on his resignation pledge, prompting a reversal among some in the military. Soon thereafter a chastened Chavez was returned to the presidential palace at Miraflores.

We have yet to see if Chavez will finish his term, or if democracy will survive his return. It is certain though that if he remains true to form, Venezuela's democratic institutions will be damaged even further under his rule. His opponents are the ones trying to preserve what is left of Venezuela's tattered and stifled democracy.

The state sometimes makes mistakes. When one of these mistakes occurs, a decline in collective enthusiasm is reflected by a resulting quantitative decrease of the contribution of each individual, each of the elements forming the whole of the masses. Work is so paralysed that insignificant quantities are produced. It is time to make a correction.

The difficult thing for someone not living the experience of the revolution to understand is this close dialectical unity between the individual and the mass, in which the mass, as an aggregate of individuals, is interconnected with its leaders.
Some phenomena of this kind can be seen under capitalism, when politicians capable of mobilising popular opinion appear, but these phenomena are not really genuine social movements. (If they were, it would not be entirely correct to call them capitalist.) These movements only live as long as the persons who inspire them do, or until the harshness of capitalist society puts an end to the popular illusions which made them possible.

The laws of capitalism, blind and invisible to the majority, act upon the individual without his thinking about it. He sees only the vastness of a seemingly infinite horizon before him. That is how it is painted by capitalist propagandists, who purport to draw a lesson from the example of Rockefeller — whether or not it is true — about the possibilities of success.
The amount of poverty and suffering required for the emergence of a Rockefeller, and the amount of depravity that the accumulation of a fortune of such magnitude entails, are left out of the picture, and it is not always possible to make the people in general see this.

In moments of great peril it is easy to muster a powerful response to moral stimuli; but for them to retain their effect requires the development of a consciousness in which there is a new priority of values.

In any case the road to success is pictured as one beset with perils but which, it would seem, an individual with the proper qualities can overcome to attain the goal. The reward is seen in the distance; the way is lonely. Further on it is a route for wolves; one can succeed only at the cost of the failure of others.

Wealth is far from being within the reach of the masses simply through the process of appropriation.

In moments of great peril it is easy to muster a powerful response to moral stimuli; but for them to retain their effect requires the development of a consciousness in which there is a new priority of values. Society as a whole must be converted into a gigantic school.

Capitalism uses force but it also educates the people to its system. Direct propaganda is carried out by those entrusted with explaining the inevitability of class society, either through some theory of divine origin or through a mechanical theory of natural selection.
This lulls the masses since they see themselves as being oppressed by an evil against which it is impossible to struggle. Immediately following comes the hope of improvement — and in this, capitalism differed from the preceding caste systems, which offered no possibilities for advancement.

In our zeal as revolutionists we try to move ahead as fast as possible, clearing the way, but knowing we must draw our sustenance from the mass and that it can advance more rapidly only if we inspire it by our example...

The road is long and full of difficulties. At times we wander from the path and must turn back; at other times we go too fast and separate ourselves from the masses; on occasions we go too slow and feel the hot breath of those treading on our heels. Of course there are dangers in the present situation, and not only that of dogmatism, not only that of weakening the ties with the masses midway in the great task. There is also the danger of weaknesses. If a man thinks that dedicating his entire life to the revolution means, that in return he should not have such worries as that his son lacks certain things, or that his children's shoes are worn out, or that his family lacks some necessity, then he is entering into rationalisations which open his mind to infection by the seeds of future corruption.
In our case we have maintained that our children should have or should go without those things that the children of the average man have or go without, and that our families should understand this and strive to uphold this standard. The revolution is made through man, but man must forge his revolutionary spirit day by day.

We know that sacrifices lie before us and that we must pay a price for the heroic act of being a vanguard nation. We leaders know that we must pay a price for the right to say that we are at the head of a people, which is at the head of the Americas. Each and every one of us must pay his exact quota of sacrifice, conscious that he will get his reward in the satisfaction of fulfilling a duty, conscious that he will advance with all toward the image of the new man dimly visible on the horizon.

The basic clay of our work is the youth. We place our hope in them and prepare them to take the banner from our hands.

Each spilt drop of blood, in any country under whose flag one has not been born, is an experience passed on to those who survive, to be added later to the liberation struggle of his own country. And each nation liberated is a phase won in the battle for the liberation of one's own country.

Each time a country is freed, we say, it is a defeat for the world imperialist system, but we must agree that real liberation or breaking away from the imperialist system is not achieved by the mere act of proclaiming independence or winning an armed victory in a revolution. Freedom is achieved when imperialist economic domination over a people is brought to an end.

I am not interested in dry economic socialism. We are fighting against misery, but we are also fighting against alienation. One of the fundamental objectives of Marxism is to remove interest, the factor of individual interest, and gain, from people's psychological motivations. Marx was preoccupied both with economic factors and with their repercussions on the spirit. If communism isn't interested in this too, it may be a method of distributing goods, but it will never be a revolutionary way of life.

I was born in Argentina; this is no secret for anyone. I am Cuban as well as Argentinean and, if the highly illustrated lordships of Latin America may not feel offended, I feel such a patriotism for Latin America, for any country in Latin America, that in the moment it might be necessary, I would be ready to yield my life for the liberation of any Latin American nation, without asking anybody anything, without demanding anything, without exploiting anyone.

No enemy, no forces should be underestimated — for there are no longer any isolated nations. As established by the second declaration in Havana, no nation in Latin America is weak, for it belongs to a family of 200 million brothers who all live in the same poverty and all have the same feelings. They all have the same enemy, they all dream of a better life and they count on the solidarity of all righteous people. This elegy of ours will be written by starving indians, by landless peasants, by exploited workers, by the progressive masses, by honest and brilliant intellectuals of which there are so many in Latin America.

The guerrilla fighter needs full help from the people of the area. This is an indispensable condition.

The monopoly capitalists — even while employing purely empirical methods — weave around art a complicated web which converts it into a willing tool. The superstructure of society ordains the type of art in which the artist has to be educated. Rebels are subdued by its machinery and only rare talents may create their own work. The rest become shameless hacks or are crushed.

The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.

The slogan "We will not allow another Cuba" hides the possibility of perpetrating aggressions without fear of reprisal, such as the one carried out against the Dominican Republic or before that the massacre in Panama — and the clear warning stating that Yankee troops are ready to intervene anywhere in America where the ruling regime may be altered, thus endangering their interests.

The socialist countries have the moral duty of liquidating their tacit complicity with the exploiting countries of the West.

To die under the flag of Vietnam, of Venezuela, of Guatemala, of Laos, of Guinea, of Colombia, of Bolivia, of Brazil — to name only a few scenes of today's armed struggle — would be equally glorious and desirable for an American, an Asian, an African, even a European.

We must bear in mind that imperialism is a world system, the last stage of capitalism — and it must be defeated in a world confrontation. The strategic end of this struggle should be the destruction of imperialism. Our share, the responsibility of the exploited and underdeveloped of the world, is to eliminate the foundations of imperialism: our oppressed nations, from where they extract capital, raw materials, technicians, and cheap labor, and to which they export new capital — instruments of domination — arms and all kinds of articles, thus submerging us in an absolute dependence.

While envisaging the destruction of imperialism, it is necessary to identify its head, which is no other than the United States of America.

Our every action is a battle cry against imperialism, and a battle hymn for the people's unity against the great enemy of mankind: the United States of America. As long as imperialism exists, it will, by definition, exert its domination over other countries. Today that domination is called neocolonialism.

We should like to see this Assembly (UN) shake itself out of complacency and move forward. We should like to see the committees begin their work and not stop at the first confrontation. Imperialism wishes to convert this meeting into a pointless oratorical tournament, instead of solving the grave problems of the world. We must prevent their doing so. This Assembly should not be remembered in the future only by the number 19, which identifies it. Our efforts are directed to prevent that.

Imperialism has been defeated in many partial battles. But it remains a considerable force in the world, and we cannot expect its final defeat save through effort and sacrifice on the part of all of us.

There are no boundaries in this struggle to the death. We cannot be indifferent to what happens anywhere in the world, for a victory by any country over imperialism is our victory; just as any country's defeat is a defeat for all of us.

In the social production of their life, men enter into definite relations that are indispensable and independent of their will; these relations of production correspond to a definite stage of development of their material forces of production. His religious consciousness would be dissipated like a thin haze in the real, vital air of society. Consciousness can never be anything else than conscious existence, and the existence of men is their actual life-process. If in all ideology men and their circumstances appear upside down as in a camera obscura, this phenomenon arises just as much from their historical life-process as the inversion of objects on the retina does from their physical life-process.

Where speculation ends — in real life — there real, positive science begins: the representation of the practical activity, of the practical process of development of men. Empty talk about consciousness ceases, and real knowledge has to take place. When reality is depicted, philosophy as an independent branch of activity loses its medium of existence. At the best its place can only be taken by a summing-up of the most general results, abstractions which arise from the observation of the historical development of men. Viewed apart from real history, these abstractions have in themselves no value whatsoever. They can only serve to facilitate the arrangement of historical material, to indicate the sequence of its seperate strata. But they by no means afford a recipe or schema, as does philosophy, for neatly trimming the epochs of history. On the contrary, our difficulties begin only when we set about the observation and the arrangement — the real depiction — of our historical material, whether of a past epoch or of the present.
